I took my kids swimming, now what?
You’re fresh out of the water, the little ones are shivering and the big kids take off down the beach to flirt with the cute new lifeguard. The afternoon dip was fantastic. Now it’s time to snap back to reality as you mentally prepare to wrangle the brood, load up the mini-SUV and head to the baseball field.
Quickly, you towel off and throw on your swim cover-up while maneuvering the babies out of their wet suits and yelling across the pool for the teens to stop bothering the lifeguard and get their uniforms on. You’re quick but, of course, it takes longer than expected to get everyone going and you’re left to go to the ball field in your swim cover-up. Its summer – the other parents will understand. Hell, half of them are probably in their swimsuits as well; it’s 90 degrees out after all. But, do you really want to be running around town in your bathing suit? Probably not.
Cover-ups for moms, not teenagers
As a mom, you don’t need just any swim cover-up. You need one that stays up and leaves your hands free, which rules out strapless and most sarongs. You need one that provides full coverage and could feasibly pass for a dress or t-shirt. Did we mention you are strapped for time between work, life and corralling the kids and don’t have time to look for a cover-up that meets your strict criteria? Rest easy. We’ve done the shopping for you.
Mom-worthy swim cover-up picks
(top row, left to right)
Bright stripes tee ($58/Macy’s): We like the relaxed feel of this cover-up. It could easily pass as a mini dress or, should you have enough time to pull on leggings or jeans, an oversized tee. The ruching at the thigh and hip is curve-friendly, perfect for a mom’s figure.
Tribal sleeve rashguard ($59.50/Nordstrom): Pair this on-trend rashguard with a solid colored maxi skirt or denim shorts.
Laser-cut kimono dress (sale $27.00/Macy’s): The empire waist on this style causes the fabric to skim over the tummy and thighs concealing imperfections. Wear it as a mini-dress or pair it with frayed cut-offs or faux-leather shorts for errands before heading to the pool.
(second row, left to right)
Sporty Hoodie ($29.99/6pm): This cover-up is perfect for a comfy, sporty look as the black edging provides an athletic feel. Pair with rolled ankle-jeans.
California dreaming sweatshirt (clearance $49.99/Victoria’s Secret): This relaxed light-weight hoodie is easy to throw on over any style bottom.
Striped Empire-waist dress ($58.00/Macy’s): The v-neck on this dress pulls the eye up and away from problem areas (thighs, butt, etc.). The drawstring creates an enviable figure and the flowy fabric skims the tummy and hips. If you need more coverage for running around town, just throw on a pair of black leggings.
